3 Champagne Brands for Gifting and Celebrating this Holiday

It is officially the season for champagne. If you're looking for easy-drinking bubbles that are perfect for holiday parties and gifting, here are our top picks for the champagnes worth cheering with.

Champagne Jacquesson

Voted the third best of all Champagne Houses in 2005 La Revue Des Vins De France, Jacquesson has really come of age. Based in the evocatively named town of Dizy, just to the north of Epernay, the House is run by the Chiquet brothers. The brothers are long-term advocates of the modish philosophy of zero dosage: this is put to the test in extremis with the equally modish move to release late disgorged cuvées: the juxtaposition of minimal sugar and extended lees ageing has produced these, some of the purest and most poised of all Champagnes, showing at their very best in magnum of course!

The house philosophy of releasing a clearly categorised Brut NV persists therefore, somewhat at odds with the historical precedent in the region which deliberately declines specifically to equate a batch with a certain vintage. Jacquesson's policy of so doing, albeit tangentially, is both a reflection of their adherence to the values of terroir and vintage diversity and a self-belief which over-rides any of the specific anxieties felt by the Champenois in relation to the conditions at a specific harvest.

These are very serious Champagnes with an emphasis on minerality and complexity of fruit. The wines have significant gravitas, are good food companions and age beautifully.

Champagne Fays

The history of Champagne Fays began three generations ago with Jean Fays. He only cultivated the vines. Then, the FAYS family estate was founded in the 70’s by André, father of the current owner. André perpetuated the work initiated by Jean and produced his first Champagne. Since 1985, Philippe Fays and his wife, Laurence, work a 4-hectare vineyard located in the heart of “Cote des Bar”.

Passed down from generation to generation, their vineyard covers four hectares spread over 3 villages. In “Cote des Bar”, the soil is diversified, adjusted to each vine plots with its specific characteristic and composed of different clay-limestone nuances.

The family vineyard is cultivated as a garden, respectful of environment. The Philippe Fays’ wines estate reflect the diversity of the terroir, while favoring its natural expression.

Champagne Pertois-Moriset

An independent family estate situated in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Champagne Pertois-Moriset, has from the beginning been a family business and independently owned. Grower-producers: each new generation has been nourished through the tradition and the knowledge of the vine and the wine of those who came before.

In 1951, Yves Pertois and Janine Moriset began bottling their own Champagne under the Pertois-Moriset label. Today, Yves and Janine’s granddaughter Cecile tends to the family's 20 ha. of vines with her husband Vincent. A perfect complement, as Vincent also comes from a winemaking family, but without room for his own oenological expression. Cecile inheriting hectares of coveted vines without confidence in the cellar.

With an eye on tradition, the couple has refined every aspect of Pertois-Moriset. They farm 13 ha. that stretch across some of the most prestigious parcels in the Côte des Blancs, bottling only 8 ha. under their own label. They tend an additional 7 ha. in the Côte du Sézannais, with one special Pinot Noir parcel bordering Olivier Collin’s famed Les Maillons.
