Agricola Luyt, El País de Quenehuao, Maule Valley, Chile

País

Vinified by Louis Antoine Luyt, this Pais cuvée comes from the Quenehuao plot located in the Maule region in the province of Constitucion in Chile. They are not irrigated and grow on decomposing granitic soil ranging from sand to pebbles and mixed with ferrous red clay. Translation of Quenehuao (indigenous language Mapudungun) “cool place”.

During their visit to Chile in December 2008, Marie and Marcel Lapierre, together with Louis-Antoine Luyt, chose this plot for its history and its position, a sort of Côte du Py in Chile. Mathieu and Camille then went to Chile several times during the vinification.

Talk about unique. That’s what happens when you combine low intervention winemaking with some considerably old vines (300 years!). Louis-Antoine Luyt brought his knowledge of beaujolais winemaking to a small vineyard in the Chilean Central Valley, and left the vines in control of a local farmer. The Pais goes through carbonic maceration for 10 days in stainless, bringing out dark cherry to match the intense black currant notes. Matched with fine tannins, this thing is like if Barolo had a love child with Beaujolais. Be warned! It’s VERY different, but we are into that. This País from very old vines is creamy in texture, surrounded by juicy notes of wild berries, spices and herbs. A homage – and great alternative – to Beaujolais.
